Trump’s Rejection of Peace Plans Threatens Economic Stability Amid Iran Tensions

by admin477351

President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism about the sustainability of the ceasefire with Iran, describing it as being on “life support.” In a move aimed at addressing the ongoing Iranian blockade of the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, Trump is contemplating resuming the escort of ships by the US Navy through the waterway. The president has categorically dismissed Iran’s recent peace proposals as unwise and maintains that he is not experiencing any domestic pressure to finalize a deal.

Highlighting his dissatisfaction, Trump commented on the ceasefire that has been in place since April 7, stating: “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He further remarked that the ceasefire’s condition is akin to a critical situation in which survival chances are minimal, saying it is on “massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says: ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living.’”

In an attempt to find a resolution, the United States had earlier sent Iran a list of conditions focused mainly on restricting Tehran’s nuclear expansion ambitions. However, when Iran countered with its proposals over the weekend, Trump promptly dismissed them. The president had previously halted “Project Freedom,” a plan to provide military escorts to oil tankers passing through the strait, after just over two days to allow Iran time to consider his peace overtures. This military plan faced pushback from Saudi Arabia, which declined the use of its airspace or bases for what it deemed an escalatory action.

Trump’s recent comments followed a spike in oil prices, prompted by Iran’s declaration that further discussions to lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would not proceed unless the US accepted its terms. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, an ex-commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, emphasized that no further negotiations would occur unless there was a comprehensive resolution addressing several concerns. These include the cessation of the conflict across all fronts, the lifting of sanctions, the release of blocked funds, compensation for war damages, and the acknowledgment of Iran’s sovereignty over the strait.
