As the drive for renewable energy gains momentum, a new project in Traverse City, Michigan, is poised to enhance energy resilience through advanced storage solutions. A collaborative effort between Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC) and the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) has secured final funding approval from the U.S. Department of Energy for an innovative energy storage initiative.

This project centers on the installation of a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system at GTRLC’s headquarters. This system is designed to complement the existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic array, storing solar-generated electricity for use during peak demand times. By doing so, it aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy utilization in the region.

Funding for this initiative is channeled through Congressionally Directed Spending, administered by the U.S. Department of Energy. The project will utilize ABC’s patented GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology, which is noted for its reduced lead content compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. This innovation retains the safety and recyclability benefits of lead-based chemistry while minimizing environmental impact.

The energy storage system will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ enclosures. This marks a significant step in Michigan’s role in the domestic energy storage supply chain, as both the development and manufacturing of these batteries are conducted within the state.

With the procurement and manufacturing phase now underway, the project is set on a timeline that aims for installation and commissioning by the second quarter of 2027. This development not only underscores the technological advancements in energy storage but also highlights the strategic efforts to bolster energy resilience at the local level.
