Despite a diplomatic row over the revocation of Andy López Beltrán’s US visa, Mexico and the United States continue to bolster their security cooperation. The decision to revoke the visa has been met with criticism from Mexico’s ruling Morena party, who have accused the US of political meddling. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stood by López Beltrán, asserting that there is no evidence to support claims of misconduct against him.
Amid the disagreement, the two nations maintain their collaborative efforts. US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson revealed that Mexico would now have access to the US drone procurement market, underscoring the ongoing defense collaboration between the countries. This development highlights the commitment to fortifying defense ties, despite underlying political tensions.
President Sheinbaum also reversed an earlier decision by allowing Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch to participate in a US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) security conference in Argentina. This move underscores the continued focus on collaboration in addressing issues such as drug trafficking, border security, and organized crime, even as disputes over sovereignty and US activities persist.
The bilateral relationship has been further complicated by US allegations against officials in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, coupled with Washington’s demands for arrests and extraditions. Mexico has pushed back against some of these demands, emphasizing its sovereignty. Nonetheless, both nations appear committed to developing a more stable security partnership, navigating broader political disagreements along the way.
