Treasury Unveils Trump Commemorative Coin, Impacting Collectible Market Dynamics

The US Mint has started producing a new commemorative dollar coin featuring President Donald Trump, as part of the events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States, according to an announcement by the US Treasury Department. The coin is set to be released this fall, marking a significant addition to the nation’s collection of commemorative currency.

The final design of the coin, which was approved earlier this year by Treasury officials, has undergone some modifications from its original concept. Notably, the coin will feature a gold-colored finish rather than being crafted from solid gold. This design change is intended to enhance the coin’s appeal and accessibility as a commemorative item.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has remarked that the coin is a tribute to the enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism in America. He emphasized that it reflects the nation’s values and dedication to freedom. The front of the coin is adorned with a portrait of Trump, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the dates “1776–2026,” and the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse side showcases the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

The decision to feature a living president on the coin has sparked controversy, as federal law typically prohibits such depictions on US currency. Nonetheless, Treasury officials argue that the secretary possesses the authority to approve commemorative coin issues under specific circumstances, allowing this unique portrayal to proceed.
