Live-Action ‘Moana’ Underperforms, Impacting Disney’s Global Revenue Forecast

by admin477351

Disney’s latest venture into live-action cinema, an adaptation of Moana, premiered at the top of the North American box office, although it did not meet financial expectations. The film gathered $43 million from the United States and Canada in its first weekend. Additionally, it secured $52 million internationally, totaling a global opening of $95 million. This comes against a substantial production budget of $250 million.

The film is directed by Thomas Kail and features Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui. Meanwhile, Catherine Lagaʻaia steps into the spotlight with her debut as Moana. While Lagaʻaia’s portrayal has been met with applause, the movie has faced scrutiny for its adherence to the storyline of the 2016 animated original. Critics have given the film a lukewarm reception, with a score of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nonetheless, audiences have been more forgiving, with many families expressing willingness to recommend the film despite its mixed reviews.

Disney has seen considerable success with its live-action remakes in recent years, yet not all have been commercial hits. Moana’s initial box office performance is being compared to that of Snow White, which also experienced a lukewarm reception upon its theatrical release. The film’s softer debut is partly attributed to stiff competition, as several other family-friendly films are vying for the audience’s attention at this time.

Industry experts suggest that the crowded market for PG-rated movies has affected Moana’s opening weekend figures. However, they also point out that family films often enjoy prolonged success at the box office, benefiting from word-of-mouth recommendations over time. Despite the initial slow start, there is optimism that the film could maintain steady performance in the weeks to come, provided audience enthusiasm persists.
