US Nears Finalization of Trade Agreement with India, Says Secretary Rubio

by admin477351

The United States is on the verge of finalizing a trade agreement with India, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Rubio emphasized the significance of the ongoing negotiations, particularly in light of national security waivers concerning Russian energy sanctions. These discussions are a critical component in the broader context of US-India relations.

Rubio highlighted the complexities of transitioning energy supplies, acknowledging India’s continued reliance on Russian energy imports. He explained that the US decision to temporarily waive certain sanctions against Russian energy is partly due to high global energy prices and the logistical challenges countries face in sourcing alternative energy supplies. These sanctions have been deferred, not abolished, allowing the US to potentially reinstate them in the future.

As part of his efforts to solidify the trade agreement, Rubio is scheduled to visit India, where he will meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai. The impending agreement is seen as a step forward in strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

On the Indian side, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that the initial stage of the bilateral trade agreement has been finalized and is currently undergoing legal drafting. Both countries are actively working to complete the process and operationalize the agreement, which is expected to enhance trade and economic collaboration.

The prospective trade deal comes at a time when geopolitical tensions and economic considerations are shaping international alliances and partnerships. The US and India are keen on fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that aligns with their respective economic and security interests.
