In an effort to enhance the fight against drug trafficking, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced plans for increased collaboration with Latin American nations. Speaking during his visit to Ecuador, Rubio highlighted the United States’ intention to form partnerships for joint anti-drug operations, specifically targeting operations in territorial waters of countries like Ecuador and Colombia, and ensuring compliance with their local laws.
Rubio’s statement comes as the US continues its military campaign against maritime drug trafficking. Recently, a strike in the Caribbean Sea resulted in the deaths of three individuals, adding to the cumulative toll of at least 230 fatalities over 69 operations since the campaign’s inception in September 2025. These operations aim to dismantle networks and curtail the flow of illegal drugs to the United States.
The Secretary of State emphasized that any future military actions will be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the specific threat level and the vessel’s location. He believes that fostering cooperation with regional governments will play a crucial role in disrupting drug-smuggling routes and eventually bringing them to an end.
This strategic shift towards more collaborative efforts comes in response to previous criticism of the US’s unilateral strikes on vessels. These actions have been controversial, particularly under the Trump administration, which targeted vessels suspected of being operated by so-called “narco-terrorists.” Rubio’s approach suggests a move towards more diplomatic and cooperative measures with neighboring countries.
