The city of Selma is set to undergo a significant transformation with the launch of the Selma Digital Innovation Center. Announced by the Selma Housing Authority, Metro Digital Group, and a coalition of educational and civic leaders, this initiative aims to blend Selma’s historic legacy with a future driven by technology and economic empowerment. The project will redevelop a historic site at 528 Washington Avenue into a hub for workforce development, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation, targeting students, young adults, and the broader community.

Collins Pettaway Jr., President of Progress Partners for Selma, emphasized that the project transcends traditional redevelopment. “We are creating future opportunity infrastructure for our community,” Pettaway stated, highlighting the necessity for Selma to adapt to a rapidly evolving digital landscape. The collaboration involves key local entities, including the Mayor’s Office, Selma City Schools, Wallace Community College Selma, and Selma University, to ensure that the initiative addresses educational and economic needs.

The center will feature facilities such as gaming and esports environments, AI and STEM learning labs, and media production spaces, fostering an ecosystem conducive to innovation and learning. Metro Digital Group, a nationwide leader in digital engagement and workforce development, will spearhead the development of the center’s ecosystem. Shaon Berry, President of Metro Digital Group, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the initiative aligns with their mission to create inclusive technology ecosystems that promote economic mobility and workforce readiness.

Local leaders see this project as a beacon of development for Selma. Councilwoman Lesia James remarked on the symbolic importance of such collaborations in paving the way for new opportunities for the city’s youth and residents. John Deamer, Vice President of Progress Partners, added that the center is designed to eliminate traditional barriers to learning, offering pathways in technology, entrepreneurship, and digital media. The project plans to commence its design and construction phases in June 2026, aiming for an opening in 2027.

Progress Partners and Metro Digital Group are actively seeking strategic partnerships and sponsorships to support the project’s long-term vision. Roger Blackmon, Progress Partners Director of Technology, highlighted the futuristic design of the technology rooms, which aim to inspire learners of all ages. The center also intends to foster family learning environments, further enriching the community’s educational landscape. Progress Partners for Selma, formed in November 2025, continues to drive initiatives for economic development and community pride in Selma.
